BEVERLY HILLS, April 11, (THEWILL) – After Round 4 matches of the 2020/2021 TOTAL Confederation of African Football (CAF) Confederation Cup were played on Sunday across the continent, Nigeria’s Enyimba FC of Aba, the fifth-placed side of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) were knocked off the summit of Group A.
Two first half goals and one more in the second half against Algeria’s leading Ligue 1 club Entente Sportive Setifienne, “ES Setif” for short, at the May 8 1945 Stadium, handed the People’s Elephant of Aba their second loss of the campaign keeping them on six points, which is now two points behind group leaders Orlando Pirates of South Africa.
The Buccaneers, as the Pirates are known in the Premier Soccer League of South Africa, won the group’s other game against the group’s third placed side, Libya’s Al Ahli Benghazi by another three goal margin to move to eight points and top Group A.
ES Setif’s defensive midfielder Amir Karaoui broke the deadlock one minute after the half hour mark as Ahmed Kendouci laid the pass on a plate for him to nestle the ball in the net. Just before the break, centre forward Mohamed Amoura doubled their advantage, to take them into the interval with a comfortable lead.
It would remain that way until five minutes past the hour before another defensive midfielder in the person of Akram Djahnit would slot home a penalty kick after the referee penalised the visitors for an infringement in the box.
The fortunes of the Peoples Elephant remain delicately poised with two matches remaining but they remain in qualification contention and, with just two matches left, have to win when next they play, which will be away against Al Ahli Benghazi on April 21.
