July 12, (THEWILL) – The Women’s Euro 2022 hosts England soundly lambasted Norway 8-0 to advance to the knockout rounds and write themselves into the history books.
England had appeared uneasy in their narrow 1-0 victory against Austria, but they were a team filled with confidence when they utterly destroyed the two-time European winners in the Group A match at the Amex Stadium to become the first team to score eight goals in a European Championship, the largest victory in men’s or women’s history.
With a penalty kick in the 12th minute, Georgia Stanway gave England the lead and three minutes later, Lauren Hemp made it 2-0. Before halftime, England increased its lead to 6-0 thanks to goals from Beth Mead and Ellen White. In the 66th minute, Alessia Russo headed in a cross from Lucy Bronze to make it seven. Mead then had the final say by completing her hat-trick from close range.
No matter the result in the final group match against Northern Ireland, England is through to the knockout rounds and is guaranteed to finish first in the group given their head-to-head records against Austria and Norway.
But, it is the end of the road for Northern Ireland following a 2-0 loss against Austria. The Irish, who are competing in the competition for the first time, have an early flight home and will hope to fare better in subsequent competitions.
