June 26, (THEWILL) – England finished in first place in Euro 2024’s Group C despite a disappointing 0-0 draw against Slovenia. The Three Lions, already assured of knockout stage qualification, failed to impress in their final group match at Cologne Stadium.

Gareth Southgate’s side struggled to create clear-cut chances throughout the encounter. A disallowed goal from Bukayo Saka in the 20th minute was the closest England came to breaking the deadlock. Harry Kane narrowly missed connecting with a Kieran Trippier cross just before halftime, epitomising the hosts’ frustrating evening.

The second half saw little improvement despite Southgate’s tactical adjustments. The introduction of Kobbie Mainoo at halftime and Cole Palmer’s tournament debut 20 minutes from time failed to spark the desired attacking impetus. Slovenia, content with a point, offered minimal threat going forward.

England’s uninspiring performance raises questions about their form heading into the knockout stages. However, the result was enough to clinch top spot in Group C, setting up a last-16 tie against a third-placed team on Sunday. Slovenia, meanwhile, are likely to progress as one of the best third-placed finishers.

While England remain undefeated, this lacklustre display will concern fans and pundits alike. Southgate must address his team’s creative shortcomings if they hope to make a deep run in the tournament. The Three Lions will need significant improvement to challenge the elite teams in the later stages of Euro 2024.
