August 09, (THEWILL) – Lee Carsley has been appointed as England’s interim manager following Gareth Southgate’s departure. The country’s Football Association made the announcement ahead of the upcoming UEFA Nations League tournament, set to begin next month.
The 50-year-old, who has been part of England’s coaching setup since 2020, most recently led the Under-21 team to victory in the European Championship last summer. His experience with the younger squad and familiarity with many current senior players were key factors in his selection for the temporary role.
The former Everton and Derby County midfielder will make his debut as a senior team manager on September 7, when England faces Ireland. Carsley expressed his commitment to ensuring continuity and aiming for promotion in the UEFA Nations League during his tenure.
Mark Bullingham, FA Chief Executive, praised Carsley’s coaching abilities and connections with the current squad. He confirmed that the search for a permanent manager is ongoing, with Carsley providing a strong interim solution for the immediate future.
In Carsley’s absence, Ben Futcher will take charge of the Under-21 team for their upcoming Euro 2025 qualifiers in September. The FA will announce the complete backroom staff for both the senior and Under-21 squads in due course.
