September 10, (THEWILL) – On Thursday, Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson-Herah confirmed her status as the undisputed queen of the sprint when she won the women’s 100m final at the Diamond League meeting in Zurich.
The 29-year-old sprint sensation clocked a historic time of 10.65 seconds to break the 10.76s record set by USA’s Evelyn Ashford back in 1984.
The Jamaican, who is the fastest woman alive over the two distances she sprint events, left rival British sprinter Dina Asher-Smith, who ran a season’s best 10.87s, a distant second at the finish line.
Ajla Del Ponte of Switzerland finished third at 10.93s, which was the slimmest of margins needed for the Swiss to beat another Brit Daryll Neita from the top three slot.
With her victory at the Diamond League, Thompson-Herah earned her fourth sub-10.70s dash to the finish line in the 100m. The five-time Olympic champion adds the Zurich title to the gold medals that she won in both the 100m and 200m in Tokyo earlier this summer.
