BEVERLY HILLS, December 07, (THEWILL) – Ibrahim Magu, acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), will on Thursday be screened by the Senate for confirmation as EFCC chairman more than five months after his nomination.

THEWILL recalls that President Muhammadu Buhari nominated and forwarded the name of Magu to the Senate for consideration and confirmation as EFCC chairman after the removal of Ibrahim Lamorde in November 2015.

Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, who presided at plenary on Wednesday, announced that the Senate will hold a confirmation hearing for the screening of Magu on Thursday.

Moreover, the Senate has failed to refer Magu to the relevant committee for screening as it normally does in other instances.

Ekweremadu did not reveal whether the confirmation hearing will be conducted by the committee on Anti-Corruption, or the Committee of the Whole to be chaired by the Senate President, Abubakar Bukola Saraki.

There are indications that Magu, who has been functioning on acting capacity since his nomination, may face opposition from some Senators who are poised to play up misgivings against the confirmation of Magu during his screening.

Apart from asking the some penetrating questions on the operations of the EFCC, the Senate would rely on the security report on Magu submitted to it by relevant security agencies.
