ECOWAS Court Defers Judgement On SERAP’s Suit On Twitter Ban

January 28, (THEWILL) – The ECOWAS Court of Justice in Abuja, has deferred to February 16, 2022, judgement on the suit challenging the suspension of Twitter operations by the Nigerian government.

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) had filed the suit following the ban of Twitter by President Muhammadu Buhari-led government.

However, the Federal Government had on Thursday applied to stop the court from delivering its judgement.

It argued among others that, “the judgement will constitute no practical utilitarian value to SERAP and others [since the ban has been lifted]. The court of law does not engage in an academic exercise.

“The determination of the suit by the Court will amount to an exercise in futility and devoid of purpose. It will be merely academic and theoretical as the subject matter of the suit–suspension of Twitter is no longer in existence.”

However, SERAP responded by asking the court to dismiss the application and to deliver its judgement.

The suit was earlier fixed for judgement on Monday but it has now been moved to Feb. 16.
