BEVERLY HILLS, May 19, (THEWILL) – The bid by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to keep the Super Eagles sharp, fit and engaged in the imminent international window that will be devoid of the initially scheduled Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifiers because these qualifiers were postponed due to COVID-19 concerns, has picked up steam with the confirmation of an additional friendly.

On Friday last week, THEWILL reported that a friendly tie had been agreed between five-time African Cup of Nations (AFCON) champions, Cameroon, and the country’s senior men’s national football team and 2013 AFCON champions, the Super Eagles, in Austria on Friday, June 4.

In the latest development, Nigeria’s Super Eagles will lock horns in another international friendly against Mexico, whose El Tri squad will clash with Gernot Rohr’s charges at the Los Angeles Coliseum on July 4, as announced by the Mexican National Team through their official social media account.

Last week, Rohr drew up a provisional squad list that featured Nigeria’s A list stars of 31 players to prosecute the prestigious international friendly match against Cameroon, which is billed to take place at 7:30pm Nigerian time, at the Wiener Neustadt in the Austrian capital, Vienna.

There are reports that claim Rohr plans to enlist players from the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) for the Mexico clash to assess the quality of some of the home-based players for inclusion into the Super Eagles squad, who will join Abia Warriors defender Adekunle Adeleke and Enyimba striker Anayo Iwuala, who have previously been invited.

It will be the sixth time Nigeria is meeting Mexico on the football pitch. Three of their initial five games have ended in draws while El Tri beat the Super Eagles in the other two, which include the penalty shootout loss in the Confederations Cup of 1995.
