September 18, (THEWILL) – Romelu Lukaku scored his debut Roma goal as the capital club recorded their first Serie A triumph of the campaign with a comprehensive 7-0 demolition of Empoli on Sunday.
The Belgium international rolled in Roma’s sixth of a straightforward home win in the 86th minute, while Paulo Dybala also opened his account for the term, netting a brace in the rout.
Further efforts from Renato Sanches, Bryan Cristante and Gianluca Mancini, as well as a comical Albert Grassi own goal, completed the thrashing of the division’s bottom side and lifted Roma out of the relegation places to 12th on four points.
Lukaku made his first start alongside Dybala in an attack which it is hoped will aid Roma’s bid to qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the first time since 2018. On loan from Chelsea, Lukaku came off the bench against AC Milan before the international break and had a low-key evening against Empoli apart from his simple finish from Andrea Belotti’s pass.
Jose Mourinho’s team could have added more as both Dybala and Leandro Paredes struck the woodwork from set-pieces in each half. They will hope to continue such fine form when they travel to take on FC Sheriff in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday. Things might get worse for Empoli, however, as they will meet early League leaders Inter Milan next on Sunday.
