July 29, (THEWILL) – Nigeria’s D’Tigress defeated Australia’s Opals 75-62 in women’s basketball at the Paris Olympics on Monday. The victory at Pierre Mauroy Stadium marked Nigeria’s first Olympic win in the sport since Athens 2004.

Point guard Ezinne Kalu led the charge with 19 points and five rebounds, helping Nigeria overcome the world’s third-ranked team. Despite an early 13-5 lead by Australia, Nigeria rallied to end the first quarter ahead 18-17, largely thanks to Kalu’s 11 points, including three three-pointers.

Nigeria extended their lead to 41-28 by halftime, capitalising on 16 turnovers by Australia. The Opals mounted a comeback in the second half, narrowing the gap to just two points with six minutes remaining. However, crucial free throws by Promise Amukamara and a three-pointer by Amy Okonkwo helped Nigeria pull away.

The win was a significant upset by Nigeria, coached by Rena Wakama, against the five-time Olympic medallists. Elizabeth Balogun also contributed to Nigeria’s strong performance throughout the game.

D’Tigress will face host France in their next Group B match on Thursday, followed by a game against fifth-ranked Canada on Monday. This victory positions Nigeria well in the competitive Olympic basketball tournament and comes as a positive highlight against the backdrop of poor performances by Team Nigeria at the Games so far.
