SAN FRANCISCO, November 13, (THEWILL) – There was confusion at the Anambra State House of Assembly on Tuesday over the impeachment of the Speaker, Ms Rita Mmaduagwu.

This followed a motion for impeachment moved by the member representing Aguata II Constituency, Mr Ikem Uzoezie, during plenary at the Assembly chamber in Awka, the state capital.

The motion was seconded by Onyebuchi Offor who represents Ekwusigo Constituency of the state and Uzoezie was purportedly elected as the new speaker.

The lawmakers had accused Mmaduagwu of incompetency, financial impropriety and high-handedness, among other allegations.

About 22 members were present at the plenary but only three lawmakers initially kicked against the impeachment.

The plenary was later brought to an end and adjourned till Thursday.

However, the embattled Speaker has described her purported impeachment as “a bundle of illegality.”

Describing those who allegedly impeached her as “rascals,” Maduagwu said, “Nobody can impeach me because I have not committed any offence.

“They didn’t have any power known to any law to impeach me.

“They need two-thirds of our members to impeach the Speaker or the governor. So, I’m still the Speaker.”

Maduagwu, who was rallied round by some government officials, including the Secretary to the State Government, Solo Chukwulobe, regained access to the chamber after about two hours and held a session with 11 members.
