Dortmund Reach UCL Semis After Beating Atlético Madrid

April 16, (THEWILL) – Borussia Dortmund have reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals for the first time since 2013, after a thrilling 4-2 victory over Atlético Madrid on the night, winning 5-4 on aggregate.

The German side overcame a tight first-leg defeat in Madrid, storming to victory at the Signal Iduna Park. Both sides squandered early chances before Julian Brandt broke the deadlock for the home team on the half-hour mark.

Ian Maatsen’s strike soon after gave Dortmund a commanding lead on the night, but Atlético equalised shortly after the interval through an unfortunate own goal from Mats Hummels. Ángel Correa then levelled the tie on aggregate, only for Niclas Füllkrug and Marcel Sabitzer to score late goals and settle the thrilling encounter.

The victory means Borussia Dortmund have reached the UCL semi-finals for the first time in over a decade. They will now face Paris Saint Germain for a chance in the final.

Dortmund’s triumph on home soil was crucial, as they recorded their ninth European tie success in their history after losing the first leg away. Goalkeeper Jan Oblak produced some fine saves late on, but could not prevent the Bundesliga side from advancing.
