June 25, (THEWILL) – The cast of top players unable to make it to Wimbledon increased today by a factor of one as US Open champion Dominic Thiem officially withdrew from the All-England Club competition due to an injury to his wrist.

Thiem was engaged in a match against Adrian Mannarino on Tuesday this week when he had to retire with a pain in his wrist. Further examination and tests led his doctors to a diagnosis of “a detachment of the posterior sheath of the ulnar side of the right wrist.”

Because he will have his wrist in a splint for the next five weeks at least, he is out of contention for not just Wimbledon which starts on Monday, June 28, but also Hamburg, from July 12, and Gstaad, from July 19.

The Austrian confirmed on social media that he will take medical advice on when he will be able to compete again. His statement read: “I’m going to do everything the doctors say in order to recover as quickly as possible.”

Ranked 5th in the world, Thiem is not a grass specialist and has never been beyond the fourth round in SW19. Yet, he will be very well aware that his title defence at Flushing Meadows is not far away and will need to put in some good practice time under his belt in preparation for that.

This has been a tough and challenging year for some tennis pros and Thiem is one of them. He has only won nine matches so far while he has lost eight, including a first-round defeat at Roland-Garros at the hands of the unseeded Pablo Andujar, which he defended as not due to his lack of motivation.
