July 31, (THEWILL) – Novak Djokovic has advanced to the Olympic singles quarter-finals for a record fourth time. The Serbian tennis star defeated Germany’s Dominic Koepfer 7-5 6-3 in Wednesday’s match at Roland Garros.
This victory marks Djokovic’s 16th career singles win at the Olympics, the highest number since tennis rejoined the Games in 1988. Despite his 24 Grand Slam titles, Djokovic’s Olympic record has been modest, with only a bronze medal to his name.
At 37, Paris 2024 likely represents his final chance to add an Olympic gold to his extensive list of achievements. The former world number one has yet to drop a set in the tournament, following his emotional win against long-time rival Rafael Nadal in the previous round.
The match against Koepfer began with Djokovic securing an early break, though he immediately lost this advantage. However, at 5-6 in the first set, Koepfer made crucial errors, allowing Djokovic to claim the set. The German player required medical attention early in the second set, after which his resistance waned.
Djokovic’s quarter-final opponent will be Greek eighth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, who defeated Argentina’s Sebastian Baez.
In the women’s draw, all four quarter-final matches are scheduled for Wednesday as the competition moves closer to the medal rounds. The Olympic tennis event at Roland Garros continues to provide high-level competition as players vie for the coveted medals at play.
