Dier Set To Finalise £4m Move To Bayern

January 11, (THEWILL) – Bayern Munich are close to finalising a £4 million deal to sign England international, Eric Dier, from Tottenham Hotspur, manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed on Thursday. The 29-year-old defender was spotted arriving in Munich ahead of a medical examination, telling reporters that he views Bayern as “a wonderful club”.

Dier’s impending transfer comes after a decade spent with Tottenham, during which time he made over 200 appearances for the North London side. With first-choice centre-back Kim Min-Jae soon set to join up with South Korea for the Asian Cup, Tuchel has made strengthening his defensive options a priority during the January transfer window. Securing Dier’s signature will provide valuable cover and versatility across the back line.

Primarily a centre-back, Dier can also fill in effectively as a defensive midfielder or right-back if needed. His wealth of English Premier League experience will aid his adaptation to life in the Bundesliga as Bayern seek to chase down league leaders Bayer Leverkusen. The deal is believed to have accelerated swiftly across the past week, with Dier entering the final six months of his Tottenham contract.

Spurs look set to pocket a modest fee for the player rather than lose him for free when his deal expires this summer. Dier joins Bayern team-mate and long-time friend, Harry Kane, in making the move from North London to Bavaria over the past year as the German giants invest heavily in English talent.

Tuchel told reporters that securing Dier’s signature will “first and foremost, free up Leon Goretzka for midfield”, highlighting the new recruit’s defensive qualities. Along with Upamecano and summer signing De Ligt, the Englishman will compete for a starting berth in the heart of Bayern’s back four. Dier has made 49 appearances for the England national team, offering aerial prowess, positional intelligence and a recognised goal threat from set pieces.

Bayern will be hoping their new arrival can hit the ground running as they return from the Bundesliga’s winter break against Hoffenheim. The German champions currently sit second in the standings but have a game in hand over surprise package Leverkusen. Adding strength in depth to an already packed squad, Dier’s capture reinforces Bayern’s status as serial favourites to regain the domestic crown.
