February 14, (THEWILL) – Real Madrid defeated RB Leipzig 1-0 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 clash, thanks to a moment of magic from Brahim Diaz. Stepping up in the absence of injured talisman Jude Bellingham, Diaz scored a superb 48th-minute solo goal to give Los Blancos a narrow advantage heading into the return fixture at the Bernabeu.
The Spanish side were made to work hard for their victory by a lively Leipzig outfit who spurned several opportunities to take the lead through striker Benjamin Sesko. The Slovenian had three golden chances inside the opening 10 minutes, while Dani Olmo and Amadou Haidara also went close in a dominant second-half display from the Bundesliga outfit.
Ultimately, however, Diaz’s slick dribbling and composed finish proved the difference on an evening when Real were otherwise lacklustre in attack. The midfield maestro glided past three Leipzig defenders before curling a left-foot strike across Peter Gulacsi and into the far corner.
There was late drama for the visitors as Diaz limped off injured after his earlier heroics, presenting boss Carlo Ancelotti with yet another selection headache ahead of the second leg. Yet, Real will be satisfied with a priceless three points and a clean sheet to take back to the Spanish capital in three weeks.
On the balance of play, Leipzig deserved more, but Diaz’s moment of magic left the tie delicately poised ahead of the return game on March 6.
