Diaz Returns To Salvage Draw For Frustrated Liverpool At Luton

November 05, (THEWILL) – Liverpool avoided an embarrassing defeat at Luton Town on Sunday, needing a stoppage time equaliser from substitute, Luis Diaz, to salvage a 1-1 draw against the newly promoted side.

On their first league visit to Kenilworth Road in over 30 years, Liverpool struggled to break down a resolute Luton defence in a tight first half. Darwin Nunez went close for the visitors, hitting the bar, but Luton had their chances too with Ross Barkley wasting a good opportunity.

The second half followed a similar pattern until Luton stunned Liverpool by taking the lead 10 minutes from time. A rapid counter-attack saw substitute, Tahith Chong, finish coolly past Alisson Becker after being played in by Issa Kabore.

Liverpool piled on late pressure and finally found an equaliser in the 95th minute through Diaz, who headed in Harvey Elliott’s cross for his first appearance since his father was kidnapped in Colombia last week.

It was a much-needed boost for Diaz after a traumatic week, but Liverpool will be disappointed not to have beaten a Luton side who executed their gameplan well. The draw leaves Liverpool 4th in the English Premier League table, while Luton are 17th, a spot above the drop zone.
