Diallo Header Against Mauritania Keeps Senegal Top Of World Cup Qualifiers

June 10, (THEWILL)- Senegal maintained their unbeaten start to the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Mauritania in Nouakchott on Sunday.

Habib Diallo’s 27th-minute header from Pape Matar Sarr’s cross proved decisive for the Lions of Teranga, who were missing the services of injured stars Sadio Mane and Nicolas Jackson.

Despite the narrow scoreline, Senegal dominated proceedings but found it challenging to breach the resolute Mauritanian defence. There was a lengthy delay in the second half when frustrated home fans threw objects onto the pitch, causing a temporary suspension of play.

Aliou Cisse’s side now tops Group B with eight points from four matches, one point ahead of Sudan, who have a game in hand, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The victory sets Senegal up nicely for their next qualifier against Sudan in September, as they aim to secure a spot at the 2026 World Cup co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
