June 26, (THEWILL) – Denmark advanced to the Euro 2024 knockout stages following a lacklustre 0-0 draw against Serbia. The result saw the Danes finish as group runners-up, while Serbia exited the tournament without a win.
In a match of few clear-cut chances, Denmark’s best opportunities came in the first half. Alexander Bah headed wide from Joakim Mæhle’s cross, whilst Christian Eriksen, becoming Denmark’s most-capped player, saw a long-range effort saved. Rasmus Højlund also tested Serbian goalkeeper Predrag Rajković before the break.
Serbia struggled to create meaningful opportunities throughout the contest. Their only notable chance of the first half fell to Aleksandar Mitrović, who failed to convert a headed opportunity. The Eagles did have the ball in the net shortly after halftime, but Luka Jović’s effort was ruled out for offside.
As the match progressed, Denmark looked more likely to break the deadlock. Andreas Christensen and Morten Hjulmand both missed the target, while Jannik Vestergaard’s header from a corner was comfortably saved. Serbia, needing a win to have any chance of progression, introduced attacking substitutes but lacked the creativity to breach Denmark’s defence.
The stalemate means Denmark advance to the Round of 16 with three points from three draws. Serbia, meanwhile, finish bottom of the group with two points, extending their wait for a first-ever knockout stage appearance at a major tournament.
