Delta Gov Celebrates Football Legend Jay-Jay Okocha On 50th Birthday

August 15, (THEWILL) – Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, celebrated football legend Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha on Monday, on the occasion of his 50th birthday.

In a statement, the governor praised Okocha’s “quintessential” contributions to Nigerian and world football over his illustrious career. Oborevwori highlighted Okocha’s patriotism, humility, mentorship of young players, and ongoing role as a sports ambassador for Delta State. He noted that as a leading football talent, Okocha brought valuable experience to his tenure as Chairman of the Delta Football Association from 2015 to 2019.

“As one of the most talented footballers Delta has produced, we are proud of your many achievements in the round leather game,” said Oborevwori. “On behalf of the government and people of Delta, I congratulate an illustrious son of the state, Austin Jay-Jay Okocha on his 50th birth anniversary.”

Okocha was captain of the Nigerian national team, known as the Super Eagles, at the 2002 FIFA World Cup. He amassed 73 caps for Nigeria between 1993 and 2006, scoring 14 goals. At club level, he starred for teams including Eintracht Frankfurt, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bolton Wanderers.

As he turns 50, Oborevwori said Okocha’s family, friends and admirers have cause to be thankful to God for his wonderful accomplishments and contributions to Nigerian sports. The governor wished the football legend continued success.
