September 29, (THEWILL) – Liam Delap’s double strike helped Ipswich Town earn a valuable 2-2 draw against Aston Villa in the English Premier League on Sunday. The newly-promoted side demonstrated their competitiveness at Portman Road, holding their own against established top-flight opposition.
Delap opened the scoring early in the eighth minute, giving Ipswich a dream start. However, Villa showed their quality by turning the tables. Morgan Rogers equalised before Ollie Watkins put the visitors ahead, seemingly setting the stage for another Villa comeback victory.
The hosts refused to be beaten, though. Delap capped off a swift counter-attack in the 72nd minute with a skilful move to beat Diego Carlos before firing home with his left foot. This goal not only levelled the match but also highlighted Delap’s finishing ability.
Both sides had chances to win it late on. Emiliano Martinez made a crucial save to deny Delap a hat-trick, while Pau Torres produced a vital block to thwart Wes Burns. In the closing stages, Ross Barkley and Jack Taylor tested the respective goalkeepers, but neither side could find a winner.
The draw represents a positive result for Ipswich, boosting their confidence in their fight for EPL survival. For Villa, it is a minor setback in their bid to remain competitive higher up the table, but they remain well-positioned as the 2024/2025 season approaches its final stages.
