Defensive Woes Prove Costly As Nigeria Succumbs To Mali Defeat

March 27, (THEWILL)- The Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles, suffered a disappointing 2-0 loss against Mali’s Eagles in an international friendly match played in Marrakech, Morocco, on Tuesday night. El Bilal Toure and Kamory Doumbia scored in each half to hand Finidi George’s side their first defeat in his second match since he took over as interim coach.

The opening goal arrived in the 18th minute when Chidozie Awaziem’s defensive error allowed Atalanta striker, Toure, to pounce from close range. Despite chances for Moses Simon and Cyriel Dessers, the Super Eagles could not find an equaliser before Doumbia’s late strike sealed Mali’s victory with three minutes remaining.

The result marks a disappointing outcome for Nigeria, who were looking to build momentum after their 2-1 win over Ghana last Friday. George will need to address the defensive lapses that proved costly, as the Super Eagles prepare for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

The defeat must be viewed in the context of how important friendlies are in preparing a football team to jell better and create a better understanding of themselves and what the coaching bench demands of them. With important competitive fixtures on the horizon, the Super Eagles must quickly regroup and learn from this setback in Morocco.
