Cross River Tragedy: Buhari Expresses Sadness As Governor Ayade Orders Commission Of Inquiry

BEVERLY HILLS, April 21, (THEWILL) – President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday expressed shock and sadness over the tragic incident that took the lives of several Nigerians at a football viewing centre in Calabar, Cross River State last night.

The President, in a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, commiserated with the government and people of Cross River State, and football fans across the country over the unfortunate event.

Buhari commended the state government for its prompt action in setting up a commission of inquiry into the incident, and its offer of assistance to the victims and their families.

This was as the state governor, Prof. Ben Ayade has ordered the setting up of a commission of inquiry on the viewing centre tragedy that claimed many lives in Calabar.

Ayade, who described the death of the young men through electrocution as tragic and horrifying, said the state government will also offer assistance to the victims and their families.

The governor, according to a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Chief Press, Mr Christian Ita, commiserated with the victims’ families, stating that the incident marks a dark chapter in the life of state.

Buhari continued in the statement by offering his deepest condolences to the family and friends of the mostly young victims, whose sudden demise is a big blow not only to their families, but also to the football-loving nation.

He prayed that God Almighty will grant the souls of the departed eternal rest and comfort all who mourn their irreparable loss.
