BEVERLY HILLS, April 06, (THEWILL) – German international Serge Gnabry has been ruled out of featuring for Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich in Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final against French giants Paris Saint-Germain. This comes after Gnabry tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of the tie.

Bayern confirmed the news on their website and all indications point to the fact that Gnabry was not infected while on international duty as some of his contemporaries, because he was COVID-19 free when he featured as a substitute in Bayern’s 1-0 win over RB Leipzig on Saturday.

On their website, the club posted: “Serge Gnabry, 25, has tested positive for coronavirus. The FC Bayern forward is doing well and is isolating at home.”

It comes as terrible timing for Die Roten to be without the services of a player of Gnabry’s talents. The 25-year-old has featured prominently for the team this season, making 34 appearances in all competitions and scoring ten goals while chalking up five assists to his name.

Yet, these represent a marked decrease on the incredible figures he posted last campaign. In that record 2019/20 treble winning season, Gnabry featured 46 times to finish with 23 goals and 14 assists.

Still, he always performed strongly in big games and on the eve of Bayern’s biggest game of the season so far, a Champions League quarter final first leg against PSG, it is a huge downer for the Bundesliga leaders. This is more so because on Wednesday night, Bayern’s talismanic striker Robert Lewandowski will not be available as well.

The Pole is set to miss both legs after sustaining an injury on international duty with Poland, which is likely to keep him sidelined for up to four weeks, at the very least. It is impossible to overstate Lewandowski’s influence this season for Bayern. His tally of 42 goals in 36 matches is unmatched anywhere this season.

The absence of this pair of key players will force Hansi Flick to stick with a front three of Leroy Sane, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Kingsley Coman. It will be a risk as the trio started together for the first time without Lewandowski against Leipzig and none of them got on the scoresheet. But, given the circumstances, there is not much left for Flick to do.
