Court Overrules La Liga, Clears Way For Gavi To Join Barcelona’s First Team

January 31, (THEWILL) – Barcelona coach, Xavi Hernandez, has expressed his delight after a court overrode La Liga’s refusal to register Gavi as a first-team player.

THEWILL recalls that Gavi signed a new contract in September, which saw him recognised as a first-team player, but La Liga denied the registration of the deal due to Barcelona exceeding their salary cap. La Liga President, Javier Tebas, warned that the club would still be unable to register Gavi and other players due to their “deficit of more than €200m.”

After the recent court decision that overruled La Liga’s ruling and paved the way for the 18-year-old to be fully registered as a senior squad member, Xavi said, “It’s great news. Now the ball is in La Liga’s court. I’m happy for Gavi. We hope he can sign up. It’s very good news for us.”

Gavi has made 18 appearances for Barcelona this season in La Liga and has featured in five of their six Champions League games.

When asked about Tebas, Xavi said, “I don’t know. Ask him. I know him very little. I have no personal dealings with him.” Xavi added that he doesn’t see Gavi leaving the club as he is “very happy here.” Gavi also played four times at the World Cup last year.
