May 27, (THEWILL) – The Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has confirmed that Nigeria will send 100 athletes to the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, United Kingdom, which commences in about two months.
Ismaila Abubabar, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry, stated this at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) stakeholders meeting, held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
Nigeria is preparing athletes to compete in judo, athletics, boxing, weightlifting, table tennis, wrestling, para-table tennis, para-athletics, and para-powerlifting with a 100-strong contingent, he added.
Sunday Dare, the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, addressed the stakeholders meeting and directed all relevant authorities to ensure that Nigerian athletes undergo the necessary tests prior to the departure of contingents to the quadrennial event as Nigeria must avoid being embarrassed again.
Dr Simon Ebhojaiye, Team Nigeria’s Chef de Mission and Director of the Federation Elite and Athletes Department (FEAD), revealed that the formal phase of camping will take place from May 30 to June 30 and July 2 to July 21.
The Birmingham Games Village will be officially opened on July 22 and that the Games will begin on July 28 and round up on August 8.
