May 22, (THEWILL) – Manchester City had to earn the Premier League title the hard way on the last day of the season, defeating Aston Villa 3-2 and that was exactly what they did.
The fact was that City needed to match Liverpool’s result against Wolves in order to win their fourth league title under Pep Guardiola with the race going on to the final game.
However, Villa, who are managed by Liverpool legend, Steven Gerrard, led at halftime, thanks to Matty Cash’s goal midway through the first half at the Etihad Stadium.
Philippe Coutinho, an ex-Liverpool player, put Villa 2-0 up, but City, like they did against QPR to win their first Premier League title ten years ago, mounted an incredible comeback.
The hero was Ilkay Gundogan. After Rodri had restored parity, the substitute pulled City back into the game and then scored from close range to complete an the comeback.
City have now won their sixth Premier League title, and their fourth in the span of five seasons, as Liverpool defeated Wolves 3-1.
