June 17, (THEWILL) – The 16 host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup for men were announced on Thursday, with 11 of them being in the United States.
The three-country event will be hosted in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, marking the first time a three-country bid for the top international competition has been successful.
The number of teams for the 2026 World Cup is anticipated to increase to 48, up from the 32 that will compete in Qatar in 2022. It will mean 80 matches for the forthcoming event, with 60 of them taking place in the US. All of the quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals will be held in the United States.
The men’s World Cup was last held in the United States in 1994, with the final held at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. The men’s event has been hosted by Mexico twice, in 1970 and 1986, whereas Canada has never hosted the event.
