Cholera: 2-Year-Old Baby, Mother, One Other Die In Ebonyi

January 04, (THEWILL) – A two-year-old boy, Augustine Agha Elemchi and his mother, Mary Elem, have lost their lives to cholera outbreak in Amaegbu Amata, Akpoha in Afikpo North local government area of Ebony State.

Mary Elem is said to be nursing a six-month-old baby before her sudden death.

A relative to the deceased, Chief Augustine Agha, disclosed this to newsmen in the community.

Mr Agha said he lost the wife of his younger brother and her two-year-old son to cholera outbreak that occurred in the community.

About nine persons have died of ailment since one week when it broke out in the community.

He noted that it was Augustine that first died before her mother after the boy vomited and was administered drugs.

He described the death of the woman and her baby as painful, noting that the 20-year-old mother developed stomach problem in the night and died in the morning.

However, the state government on Tuesday, promised to sink 10 boreholes in Afikpo North, as a way of tackling water scarcity in the council.

Governor David Umahi disclosed this when he visited patients affected by the cholera outbreak at Amata Akpoha MDG Hospital.

Umahi, while thanking the chairman of Afikpo North local government area, Mr Uchenna Nnajiofor, the Commissioner for Health, Dan Umezurike and health workers at the facility for efforts at saving the lives of the patients, said his administration would also construct modern toilets in the area within the next two weeks.

He said, “The Commissioner for Water Resources, the Commissioner for Health and all the leaders here will tell us where to sink ten number boreholes and construct toilets here, to start latest by 6th of January.”

The Commissioner for Health, Dr Daniel Umezuruike, said over one 100 patients have been successfully managed at the health facility and thanked the state government for giving the health stakeholders the wherewithal.

The governor later donated hundreds of bags of rice, wrappers, two cows and money to the patients and health workers at the hospital.
