March 28, (THEWILL)- Chelsea’s injury crisis has deepened further with defender Ben Chilwell the latest casualty after aggravating a leg problem while away with England. Manager Mauricio Pochettino confirmed the left-back missed training on Thursday, after featuring in international friendlies against Brazil and Belgium.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s English Premier League clash with Burnley, Pochettino expressed surprise at Chilwell’s involvement over the break given his recent hamstring issue. “He wasn’t alright to train today so we will need to assess him,” the Argentine said, adding: “I was a little bit surprised that he started two games for England and now he’s had a knock.”
Chilwell’s setback compounds Chelsea’s injury headache with the Blues already missing nine first-teamers, including talisman Christopher Nkunku and captain Reece James. Midfielder Romeo Lavia will also play no further part this term after suffering a season-ending hamstring injury in training.
Despite their depleted ranks, Pochettino insists Chelsea cannot afford to underestimate relegation-threatened Burnley. “It’s not just about points because you can see the potential of their team,” he warned, adding: “They play with freedom and are very physical. It’s going to be difficult.”
Chelsea currently sit 11th while the Clarets occupy 19th spot, but Pochettino knows better than to take such standings at face value. “It’s the Premier League, any team can beat you,” the ex-Spurs boss added.
