Chelsea’s Spending Spree Continues With £40m Palmer Deal

September 01, (THEWILL) – Chelsea’s extraordinary spending under Todd Boehly’s ownership group has now surpassed £1 billion over three transfer windows, after sealing a £40 million deal for Manchester City’s Cole Palmer.

The West London club became accustomed to huge outlays in the Roman Abramovich era, but Boehly and Behdad Eghbali’s Clearlake Capital consortium have taken it to new levels. Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, Marc Cucurella and Wesley Fofana all arrived for hefty fees last summer before a record-breaking January saw Mykhailo Mudryk and Enzo Fernandez sign for over £150 million combined.

Despite the astronomical investment, Chelsea limped to a disappointing 12th-place finish in the Premier League last season. Undeterred, Boehly has already splashed out over £400m again this summer on players like Moises Caicedo, Christopher Nkunku and Axel Disasi.

The big-money capture of Southampton’s Romeo Lavia took Chelsea close to the £1billion mark and Palmer’s switch from the Etihad Stadium sealed it ahead of Thursday’s deadline. The Blues will hope the lavish outlay can help transform their fortunes under Graham Potter.

However, their spending shows no sign of slowing with more incomings anticipated before the window shuts. The rest of Europe has been left trailing in Chelsea’s wake as they continue to flex their financial muscle under Boehly’s stewardship.
