Chelsea’s Pochettino Set For Bittersweet Spurs Homecoming

November 06, (THEWILL) – Monday’s Premier League clash between Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea is set to be an emotional one for former Spurs boss, Mauricio Pochettino. The Argentine will return to north London for the first time since being sacked in 2019, but he will do so as manager of their city rivals, Chelsea.

Pochettino was a hugely popular figure during his 5-year spell in charge of Spurs, leading them to the UEFA Champions League final in 2019. However, his relationship with the fans soured after a poor start to that season, resulting in his dismissal. He has since returned to the EPL and taken over at Chelsea, but admitted this week that he does not yet have the same connection with their supporters.

In contrast, current Spurs boss, Ange Postecoglou, has quickly won over fans with his attacking style of play. Postecoglou has guided Tottenham to the top of the EPL in his first season, contrasting with Pochettino’s struggles at Chelsea. A win on Monday would send Spurs back to the summit.

Pochettino’s charm offensive towards Spurs fans in the build-up has irked some at Chelsea. Yet, his focus must now be on turning around their poor form, with his side sitting 13th ahead of the derby. Defeat would pile further pressure on the Argentine.

A hero’s welcome may not be on the cards for Pochettino on his return to Spurs and the result will likely see Pochettino leave north London this time with a reminder that the club has moved on from his reign.
