April 13, (THEWILL)- Chelsea are facing a significant challenge in their quest to adhere to the English Premier League’s sustainability regulations after reporting a staggering £89.8 million loss for the 2022/2023 season.
The Blues’ wage bill soared to over £400 million last season, while they splashed out a remarkable £745 million on transfer fees in an effort to bolster their squad. However, this massive investment in the club’s first full season under an American investment consortium, fronted by LA Dodgers co-owner, Todd Boehly, failed to deliver the desired success on the field, as Chelsea finished a disappointing 12th in the EPL.
The club’s losses were mitigated to some extent by the sale of a hotel for £76.3 million to their parent company, BlueCo. Nonetheless, figures for the current season are likely to be even worse, as Chelsea are not involved in European football, a competition that was worth around £83 million to the club in the previous season’s run to the quarter-finals.
Adding to their woes, Football Association figures released on Friday showed that Chelsea have spent a Premier League record £75 million on agents’ fees alone this season, as THEWILL reported. This staggering expenditure, coupled with the club’s continued poor performance, has raised serious concerns about their ability to comply with the EPL’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR).
Under the PSR, EPL clubs are allowed to lose a maximum of £105 million across a three-year assessment period. With Chelsea having already posted a £121 million loss in the 2021/2022 season, the club will need to raise significant sums from player sales before the end of June to avoid falling foul of the regulations. Everton and Nottingham Forest have already been penalised this season for breaching the PSR, with both clubs facing points deductions.
