December 03, (THEWILL) – Chelsea emerged victorious from a dramatic Premier League clash with Brighton this Sunday, winning 3-2 despite playing the entirety of the second half with just 10 men. Mauricio Pochettino’s Blues went down to 10 men after captain, Conor Gallagher, received a second yellow card at the end of the first half. However, Chelsea rallied to score again before clinging on during a tense finale at Stamford Bridge.
The home side raced to a two goal lead in the first half thanks to headers from new signing Enzo Fernandez and young defender Levi Colwill. But just before half time, Brighton pulled one back through Facundo Buonanotte’s fine strike. And then Chelsea’s task was made harder when Gallagher was dismissed for a poor challenge on Billy Gilmour.
Despite being a man down, Chelsea reasserted control after the break. Mykhailo Mudryk won his team a penalty which Fernandez calmly converted for his second goal. Brighton substitute Joao Pedro set up a grandstand finish with a late header. And Chelsea survived a huge penalty scare in added time when Colwill was accused of handball.
This gritty win should provide a major boost to Pochettino’s Chelsea. Playing over 45 minutes with just 10 men, they dug deep to cling on to a vital three points. The Blues move up to 10th position and fans will hope the squad keeps this momentum.
