October 25, (THEWILL) – Kai Havertz’s second-half goal gave Chelsea a tenacious 2-1 victory over Salzburg, as the Blues advanced to the last-16 of the UEFA Champions League.
The visitors took the lead in the first half thanks to a goal from Mateo Kovacic, but the hosts quickly responded in the second half with Chukwubuike Adamu, completing off a superb counterattack.
Goalkeeper, Philipp Kohn, had to make saves against Chelsea in both halves, but he was helpless to stop Havertz’s game-winning shot, which the Germany international hammered into the bottom right corner to snap Salzburg’s 40-game home unbeaten streak.
With the victory, Chelsea’s place in the round of 16 is certain, but Graham Potter’s team may still finish top of the group if Dinamo Zagreb, cannot defeat Milan in the other group tie.
Chelsea’s next match is against Brighton and Hove Albion, in the English Premier League on Saturday, while Salzburg plays Hartberg in the Austrian Bundesliga on the same day.
