August 21, (THEWILL) – Atletico Madrid have completed the signing of England midfielder, Conor Gallagher, from Chelsea. The 24-year-old has signed a five-year contract with the Spanish club, who have paid a reported €42 million fee.
Gallagher, who had been with Chelsea since the age of eight, made his senior debut for the Blues in 2022. Last season, he started 37 English Premier League matches and served as the team’s captain for much of the campaign due to injuries to Reece James and Ben Chilwell.
“We wish Conor the very best as he begins a new chapter in his career,” Chelsea said in an official statement on their website.
Gallagher, who has 18 England caps and played at Euro 2024, where the national team reached the final, was offered a new contract by Chelsea, but has now opted to join Atletico Madrid.
Atletico have been busy in the transfer market this summer, also signing Spain defender, Robin Le Normand and Norway striker, Alexander Sorloth. The club’s new signings, including Gallagher, will be unveiled to fans at the Metropolitano stadium later on Wednesday.
