August 03, (THEWILL) – Chelsea held Borussia Dortmund to a 1-1 draw in Chicago, capping off an impressive unbeaten run in their pre-season preparations for their first campaign under new manager, Mauricio Pochettino.

The opening 45 minutes saw Chelsea dominate, creating several chances to break the deadlock. As intense as the contest was, it was not until the 70th minute that Dortmund managed their first shot on target, taking the lead. However, Mason Burstow’s late goal salvaged the match, ensuring the Blues concluded their summer tour with a commendable record of three wins and two draws from five matches.

Against Dortmund, Reece James led from the front, captaining the side and contributing to a solid defensive line alongside Silva, Colwill, and Chilwell. Challenges with the tricky pitch aside, the Blues dominated the opening half, creating numerous opportunities. Jackson, Nkunku, and Chilwell orchestrated threatening attacks, while Colwill came close to breaking the deadlock with a corner delivery. A notable cause for concern arose midway through the first half when Nkunku suffered a knee injury, leading to his substitution.

However, the squad maintained their focus and continued to create chances, exemplified by Silva’s timely pass to Jackson. Although Dortmund momentarily gained the upper hand, Chelsea’s determined spirit prevailed with Burstow’s crucial equaliser. Pochettino’s management strategy was evident throughout the match, as he opted against half-time changes, underscoring the team’s readiness for the approaching season. The performance of Mykhailo Mudryk, who displayed sharpness and initiative on the pitch, was praiseworthy, although he narrowly missed a goal from distance.

The defensive line also remained resolute, with Kepa Arrizabalaga making a vital save to deny Dortmund’s Marius Wolf. Overall, Pochettino will be content with his team’s progress as the players return to England to continue their pre-season preparations at Cobham.
