January 31, (THEWILL) -Algeria secured their place in the final of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) after defeating Niger 5-0 in front of 39,000 fans in Oran.
Ayem Mahious scored two goals in the first half, bringing his tournament total to five, putting him in contention for the Golden Boot award. The Desert Warriors got off to a strong start, with captain Ayoub Abdellaoui, opening the scoring with a header from a corner in the 15th minute.
Mahious then added two more goals, before an own goal by Niger’s Boureima Katakore and a late goal from substitute, Sofiane Bayazid, sealed the victory. Niger attempted to mount a comeback in the second half, creating several chances but were unable to convert them into goals.
The Menas had their best chance in the 59th minute when Badamassi Ousseini’s header was saved by Algeria’s Farid Chaal. Despite their efforts, the home team’s defence held strong, and the game ended with a 5-0 victory for Algeria.
Algeria will face the winner of the semi-final match between Madagascar and Senegal in the final of the CHAN to be held on Saturday, at the Nelson Mandela Stadium. This marks the first time in their history that Algeria has reached the final of the tournament, and they will look to secure the title with another dominant performance.
