BEVERLY HILLS, January 19, (THEWILL) – The Confederation of African Football, CAF, says they are investigating the accusation of Zimbabwe football federation who had accused the Cameroonian national team, the host of the 2021 African Nations Championship (CHAN) of practising witchcraft after a dead bat was found with a written note at the center of the pitch.
The national team coach of Zimbabwe, Zdravko Logarusic, had stated, before Saturday’s tournament opener which the indomitable Lions won 1- 0 over Zimbabwe, that he saw a carcass of a bat on the centre-circle, with a note written on it.
The image of Logarusic, standing over the carcass of the bat quickly went viral and the Zimbabwe football federation accused Cameroon of practicing black magic.
Reacting, CAF, had stated that Cameroon will be sanctioned if evidence of wrongdoing is uncovered.
“Issues of witchcraft are not the prerogative of CAF,” a CAF official told Goal.
“We have launched an investigation into the said action and if there is a breach of the regulations of the tournament, appropriate sanctions will be handed out accordingly.”
THEWILL recalls that during AFCON 2002, riot police had arrested former Cameroon coach, Winfried Schafer and goalkeeping coach, Thomas Nkono, for allegedly placing a charm on the pitch in their semi-final clash against Mali.
