August 31, (THEWILL) – The draw for the third round of the Carabao Cup has produced some mouth-watering matchups, with English Premier League champions, Manchester City, handed a tricky trip to Newcastle United.
The clash at St James’ Park stands out as the tie of the round, following Wednesday’s draw. City were among the top flight clubs who received a bye to this stage due to their participation in European competitions. But Pep Guardiola’s side face a stern test against Eddie Howe’s high-flying Magpies, who have enjoyed an impressive start to the new campaign.
The draw has thrown up several other intriguing all-EPL contests. Brentford will host Arsenal in a London derby, while Manchester United make the trip south to face Crystal Palace. Liverpool and Chelsea both also face top flight opposition in the form of Wolverhampton Wanderers and Brighton and Hove Albion respectively.
Tottenham Hotspur, aiming to win the trophy for the first time, did not make it beyond the second round. They lost to Fulham on penalties in Tuesday’s round of matches. Chelsea almost suffered a similar fate and needed to come from behind against Football League Two side AFC Wimbledon to avoid an upset.
The third round ties will take place week commencing November 7, with the draw for the quarter-finals coming after the matches.
