November 27, (THEWILL) – Rivers United displayed their superiority on Sunday, with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Angolan opponents Academica do Lobito. The Nigerian side controlled the match from start to finish, in a display of attacking and defensive resilience at home in Port Harcourt.
The home side drew first blood early on when striker Samuel Antwi slotted home in just the 3rd minute to give Rivers United the lead. This early goal injected confidence into the Nigerian outfit and set the tone for the rest of the contest. Academica do Lobito went into the interval reeling from a dominant showing by the home team in the opening 45 minutes.
The Angolans were unable to gain a foothold in the match against the organised Nigerian defence. Rivers United continued to dictate proceedings and doubled their advantage through Paul Odeh in the 46th minute.
The hosts continued to carve out opportunities for themselves throughout. Their pressure told in the 61st minute when substitute Shedrack Asiegbu netted the third and final goal to cap off an emphatic performance. Academica rarely threatened and had no response to the quality of the Nigerian side.
The result leaves Rivers United in a strong position and joint top of their CAF Champions League group after matchday one. Meanwhile, Academica do Lobito were taught a harsh lesson on the continental stage with plenty to ponder moving forward.
