April 17, (THEWILL) – Atalanta and Fiorentina played out an entertaining 1-1 draw at the Artemio Franchi Stadium on Monday.
Joakim Maehle provided Atalanta with their opener in the first half, but Arthur Cabral put Fiorentina level on points from the penalty spot in the 56th minute. The result did little to help either side’s pursuit of their respective targets this season with Atalanta in 6th and Fiorentina in 9th in the Serie A table.
Fiorentina dominated possession throughout the game and had several chances to find the back of the net, with Antonin Barak and Gaetano Castrovilli going close in the second half. Atalanta, on the other hand, had only one shot on target, which Maehle converted to give them an early lead.
Despite having the higher momentum in the match, Fiorentina failed to be clinical and that saw them drop vital points that could keep them out of Europe entirely next season. Atalanta have given themselves a fighting chance but will require dedication to see that they earn continental football and all that comes with that next season.
Fiorentina will be hoping to get back to winning ways when they take on Lech Poznan in their next game, while Atalanta face a difficult test against Jose Mourinho’s Roma.
