SAN FRANCISCO, March 23, (THEWILL) – The Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki, has read a letter from Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, which sought approval for the nomination of 28 Nigerians as Resident Electoral Commissioners, RECs, of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Osinbajo had transmitted the nominations to the Senate in a letter dated February 27 when President Muhammadu Buhari was on medical vacation in the United Kingdom.

The nominations, made known in the letter read out by Saraki on Thursday, followed the expiration of the tenures of RECs in 28 states.

Last September, the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, blamed the spate of inconclusive elections across the country on the absence of RECs in 20 states.

He at that time urged the Senate to call on the President to nominate qualified persons to fill the vacant positions at INEC.
