October 01, (THEWILL) – Protesters in the early hours of Friday blocked roads in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja to protest against bad governance.
The protest coincides with the nation’s 61st independence anniversary.
In a video posted by Omoyele Sowore, a social critic and activist, on his verified Facebook page, a large number of protesters can be seen chanting solidarity songs.
The post was captioned, “Breaking: Independence Day Protesters commence #RevolutionNow #BuhariMustGo protest in Abuja”.
The protesters, wielding large banners, made bonfires on the highway.
However, heavily armed policemen have dispersed them.
The police stormed the venue of the protest and fired teargas canisters at them.
No arrests had been reported as at the time of filing this report.
Some Nigerians have expressed misgivings about the Independence Day celebration due to current economic and security challenges bedevilling the nation.
Sowore vowed there would be no celebration in Nigeria, a sentiment he shares with the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). IPOB had disclosed they will shut the country down and remove all Nigerian flags in the Southeast region in solidarity with their leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
Kanu is currently in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) after his rearrest in June.
