October 13, (THEWILL) – South African national team coach, Hugo Broos, retained his optimism about his side’s chances at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, following the competition’s draw in Ivory Coast. Broos’s squad was placed in Group B alongside Tunisia, Mali and Namibia for the tournament taking place January 13, to February 11.

While acknowledging Tunisia and Mali as difficult opponents, Broos was pleased to avoid facing some of the continent’s top sides like Nigeria, Senegal or Ivory Coast. “I think if we can achieve our best level then we can go through the group stages,” the coach said.

Recent injuries have disrupted preparations, but Broos hopes to have key players back for November’s World Cup qualifiers. Team captain Ronwen Williams is the latest injury concern, but with two months until the finals there is enough time for his full recovery. Regaining injured players and integrating them into the squad will be crucial. Bafana Bafana have upcoming friendlies versus Eswatini and Ivory Coast to aid preparations.

Playing the Cup of Nations hosts in front of a large crowd will provide vital experience for South Africa. “We will play in front of a full stadium and I think it is several years ago that South Africa played in front of 30,000-40,000 people, and that will be the case on Tuesday.”

While challenges remain, the coach is confident in his side’s potential. Advancing from their group is a realistic target if Bafana Bafana can build momentum and have their strongest squad available. Broos remains upbeat about his team’s chances in Ivory Coast.
