Brighton’s European Dream Gets Off To Losing Start At Home Against AEK Athens

GTBCO FOOD DRINL

September 22, (THEWILL) – Brighton and Hove Albion’s maiden Europa League campaign began with a thrilling yet agonising 3-2 home defeat to Greek champions, AEK Athens, last night.

The Seagulls went behind three times in total at the AMEX Stadium as Roberto De Zerbi’s men were beaten in their first ever continental match. AEK took a shock 11th minute lead through Djibril Sidibe before Brighton equalised from the penalty spot through Joao Pedro on 36 minutes. However, the visitors retook the lead on the stroke of half-time courtesy of Mijat Gacinovic.

Pedro levelled again from another penalty early in the second period before AEK secured the win through Ezequiel Ponce’s late strike. It was a game of fine margins and cruel luck for the hosts. Twice they battled back through Pedro’s nerveless spot-kicks only to be hit by sucker punches from the Athens outfit.

In truth, De Zerbi’s side created the better openings and were marginally the stronger team. However, they were made to pay for defensive lapses at set pieces as AEK showcased their nous and quality on the counter-attack. The Seagulls will need to tighten up at the back if they are to progress from a testing Europa League group also containing Ajax and Marseille.

Brighton will look to bounce back when they host the Cherries in the English Premier League on Sunday. AEK meanwhile face a tasty Monday night clash at home to Panathinaikos as they aim to build on this excellent start in Europe.
