Brentford Sign Reguilon On Loan From Spurs

January 17, (THEWILL) – Brentford have bolstered their defensive options with the loan signing of Tottenham Hotspur left-back Sergio Reguilon until the end of the 2023/2024 season. The deal comes as welcome news for Brentford, who have been short on full-back options after first-choice Rico Henry was ruled out for the remainder of the campaign with a knee injury back in January.

Brentford manager Thomas Frank had resorted to using right-back Aaron Hickey on the left or even deploying attacker Saman Ghoddos as a makeshift full-back. The Bees have also lined up in a 3-5-2 formation at times to compensate for the lack of a recognised left-back.

However, the arrival of the experienced Reguilon, who has made over 100 appearances for Tottenham since joining in 2020, provides Brentford with a proven English Premier League performer to fill the void.

Speaking on the signing, Frank said: “This is a very good signing for us. Sergio is a perfect fit for what we want. He’s very offensive, has a very good cross and a very good left foot.” Reguilon’s attacking qualities and delivery from wide areas are expected to give Brentford an extra dimension going forward.

Reguilon could make his Brentford debut as soon as this weekend when the Bees host Nottingham Forest. However, the Spaniard will be ineligible to face his parent club Tottenham on January 31 due to the terms of his loan agreement. Reguilon will remain at Brentford for the rest of the campaign as he seeks regular game time away from Tottenham, where he has not had much luck under manager Ange Postecoglou.
