Panel To Probe NPA MD, Hadiza Usman

BEVERLY HILLS, May 06, (THEWILL) – President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the establishment of a panel of inquiry on the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), whose Managing Director, Hadiza Usman, was on Thursday placed on suspension, following the recommendation of the Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi.

Like Buhari and Amaechi, Hadiza Usman is a founding member of the country’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Apart from the insinuations portended by the establishment of a probe, the government has attached no formal excuses to her sack.

A statement by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, laid out the constitution of the panel.

His statement said: “President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the recommendation of the Ministry of Transportation under Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi for the setting up of an Administrative Panel of Inquiry to investigate the Management of the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA.

“The President has also approved that the Managing Director, Hadiza Bala Usman, step aside while the investigation is carried out.

“Mr. Mohammed Koko will act in that position.

“The panel is to be headed by the Director, Maritime Services of the Ministry while the Deputy Director, Legal of the same Ministry will serve as Secretary.

“Other members of the panel will be appointed by the Minister.”

Former Chief of Staff to the Governor of her home Kaduna State and Co-Convener of the Bring Back Our Girls Movement, Hadiza had been appointed by the President as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NPA in 2016, amidst wide criticism bordering on the fact of her lacking a cognate experience or qualification about such a sensitive sector.

Until the current development, Hadiza, daughter of the famed radical historian of the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, the late Dr. Yahaya Bala Usman, had won the President’s approval to run a second term of five years at NPA.

Her second tenure would have lapsed in 2026.
