August 31, (THEWILL) – Aitana Bonmati has been named the 2022/23 UEFA Women’s Player of the Year, beating Sam Kerr and Olga Carmona in the voting.

The Barcelona and Spain midfielder received the award at the UEFA gala in Monaco on Thursday, following a season in which she won the UEFA Women’s Champions League and the FIFA Women’s World Cup, being named the best player in both tournaments.

The 25-year-old was instrumental in Barcelona’s historic treble of Liga F, Supercopa de Espana Femenina and Champions League, scoring 18 goals and providing 12 assists in all competitions. Bonmati is the second consecutive Barcelona player to win the UEFA Women’s Player of the Year award after Alexia Putellas won it in 2022. She is also the third Spanish player to claim the honour, following Putellas and Jennifer Hermoso in 2019/2020. Bonmati is widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world, with her vision, technique, creativity and goal-scoring ability.

The other two finalists for the award were Chelsea striker, Sam Kerr and Real Madrid winger, Olga Carmona, who scored the winning goal for Spain in the World Cup final against England and was one of the revelations of the season in Liga F.
