Boniface Strikes Again As Leverkusen Beat Cologne, Return To Bundesliga Summit

October 08, (THEWILL) – Bayer Leverkusen returned to the top of the Bundesliga table with a comfortable 3-0 victory over local rivals, Cologne, on Sunday. Nigeria forward, Victor Boniface, grabbed the third goal to round off an impressive performance and secure the three points for Leverkusen.

The visitors had won their previous two matches at Leverkusen but remain rooted to the bottom of the table with just one point from seven games this season. In contrast, Leverkusen put in a dominant display and were good value for the win.

Jonas Hofmann opened the scoring in the 22nd minute after being set up by Florian Wirtz. Boniface had a slice of luck in the build up but Cologne’s protests for handball were waved away. The second came 10 minutes later when Jeremie Frimpong turned home an Alex Grimaldo cross.

Boniface sealed the win in the 68th minute, latching onto a perfectly weighted pass from Hofmann before slotting home his seventh league goal of the campaign. Leverkusen almost added a fourth late on but Boniface’s shot fizzed just past the far post.

The victory sent Leverkusen back to the Bundesliga summit, with defending champions Bayern Munich hosting Freiburg as they play catch-up.
